Promoting Circular Wood Construction in Cities

Promoting Circular Wood Construction in Cities

The three-year FITFORWOOD research project is investigating how cities can transition to a circular wood construction model as part of a sustainable bioeconomy.

FITFORWOOD is carried out by the project partners, the University of Freiburg and the European Forest Institute, and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR).

why circular wood construction?

Circular timber construction combines climate protection, resource efficiency, and sustainable urban development.

Many cities recognize the potential of wood construction for climate protection and sustainable development—yet at the same time, there is often a lack of concrete strategies, suitable framework conditions, and practical knowledge that can be applied elsewhere.

This is exactly where FITFORWOOD comes in: The project analyzes experiences from pioneering cities around the world, identifies key success factors, and develops approaches for how these can be specifically applied to other cities in the German context.

In doing so, FITFORWOOD combines scientific analysis with practical application and brings together key stakeholders from politics, business, government, and society.

THE SCIENTIFIC APPROACH: INTERDISCIPLINARY + PRACTICAL

SCIENCE + PRACTICE

FITFORWOOD combines scientific analysis with practical application. Findings from research and case study analyses are specifically tailored for use by cities.

STAKEHOLDER-INCLUSION

The project brings together stakeholders from politics, business, academia, and civil society. The goal is to facilitate a structured exchange of diverse, relevant perspectives.

BUILDING A NETWORK OF CITIES

Through exchanges between cities, experiences are shared and lessons are learned from one another. This creates a network that supports the implementation of circular timber construction approaches.
